DIY Summer Garland Ideas Using Paper, Fabric, and Faux Florals

A DIY summer garland is one of the easiest ways to refresh a room, decorate a party table, brighten a patio, or add a handmade detail to seasonal celebrations. Garlands are flexible, affordable, and beginner-friendly, making them a perfect project for crafters who want quick results with plenty of creative style.

Paper garlands are the simplest place to start. Use cardstock, scrapbook paper, kraft paper, or patterned paper to cut shapes such as circles, flags, stars, lemons, suns, shells, leaves, or flowers. String the pieces onto twine, ribbon, or cotton cord. Paper garlands work well on mantels, shelves, windows, dessert tables, kids’ rooms, and craft corners.

For a clean and modern look, choose one shape and repeat it in several colors. For example, a circle garland in white, pale yellow, and soft blue can feel fresh and summery. A flag garland in gingham and kraft paper can feel perfect for picnics or backyard gatherings.

Fabric garlands add more texture. Use cotton scraps, linen strips, ribbon pieces, lace, or old fabric remnants. Tie fabric strips onto twine for a relaxed, rustic garland. This is a great way to use leftover fabric from sewing projects while creating decor that feels soft and handmade.

Faux floral garlands can bring a garden-inspired look indoors or outdoors. Use small artificial flowers, greenery stems, floral wire, and twine to create a lightweight decorative strand. Keep the flowers spaced evenly for a delicate look, or cluster them for a fuller party backdrop.

A mixed-material garland can feel especially polished. Combine paper tags, fabric strips, and faux greenery for a layered summer design. This works beautifully for bridal showers, baby showers, garden parties, birthday brunches, and seasonal home decor.

Color palette makes a big difference. For a coastal summer garland, use blue, white, sand, and sea glass green. For a garden party, choose blush, sage, cream, and soft yellow. For a bright kids’ room or birthday party, use coral, turquoise, orange, and lemon yellow.

If you want the garland to last, choose durable materials and secure the pieces well. Paper garlands should be kept away from rain and high humidity. Fabric garlands are more forgiving and can often be stored and reused. Faux floral garlands should be gently packed in a box so the petals do not bend.

Garlands can also be functional. Use small clothespins to attach photos, memory cards, postcards, or handmade notes. This creates a display that can change throughout the summer and becomes especially meaningful after vacations, parties, or family gatherings.

For kids, garland making is a fun group craft. Pre-cut shapes for younger children, or let older kids design their own. They can decorate paper pieces with stickers, stamps, markers, or glitter glue if the project is supervised and cleanup is planned.

DIY summer garlands are simple, cheerful, and easy to customize. Whether made from paper, fabric, faux florals, or a combination of all three, they bring color and handmade charm to summer homes, parties, and creative spaces.
